About the founders
Suicide Prevention Education Awareness for Kids United as Partners Foundation
The Speak Up foundation was created and formed by two families that both suffered a devastating loss due to mental illness ending in suicide. Speak Up Foundation is a program of Jewish Family Services.
The Arkin and Doss families share the same devastation in losing a beloved child in 2015: Jason Arkin and Sara Prideaux. It is from these tragic events that we decided to rise from the fiery ashes and create this foundation. We are two families who have walked different paths ending in one united fight. We are united in breaking the silence and reducing stigma surrounding all mental illness and suicide. Our hope is that Speak Up will provide education and awareness in our community bridging the gaps between community, schools and parents. We want to encourage open conversations with our children and educate our community about the different signs of children who may be at risk. We hope that you will join our fight and pledge to end the stigma surrounding mental illness and suicide.
During the journey of creating and establishing Speak Up and the “You Be You” teen campaign, we have joined forces with other parents who have lost their children. We want to acknowledge the life of Lane Marrs, Ethan Young and Jack Ryan. Who’s parents have become apart of the Speak Up family. It’s through tragedy that we found each other and through triumph of the Speak Up Foundation that we will keep them alive. As there memories will always be present and they will always be missed and loved.
